Well, it has been requested by a couple people that I post something new on this here site…if nothing else to move the post about breasts down the page, lol.
And I was told that I could blog about anything. So here goes.
The other day I was in the car with my mom and my two cousins. Race had a little book full of pictures, and was looking through the book. I was interjecting periodically with information about pictures. Teaching what I found interesting. Well, there was a portrait of Martin Luther. I asked them if they knew who that was. And they both said no.
Now, Race, being nearly 10, not knowing was not as bad. Samantha, who is 14, turned and said, “I know Martin Luther King, Jr.” Now, I realize that he did much to help the civil rights movement, but that is not the point. Clearly Martin Luther’s actions have much more widespread outcomes. I quickly explained, in my best kid-friendly version, the story of Martin Luther and how he pointed out some of the errors of the Catholic church. I then explained that many of the Christian churches now fall under two categories: Catholic and Protestant (I realize this is very general, but he was 9, so I was simple.) He then looked at me and asked, “What are we?”
All I could think was how sad it was that this young boy, who I know has a desire to know more about the Lord, is not getting the answers he needs. I explained to him that when he goes to church it is usually with grandma, and she goes to a Protestant church.
I think that if we wait to long to help him find the answers about God, he will end up getting engrossed in the world and not caring about spiritual things… as I see his sister beginning to do now.
