Girl with a Pearl Earring

July 6th, 2005 · No Comments

Well, I have finally seen the movie The Girl with a Pearl Earring with Scarlett Johansson. I find myself watching nearly everything with a bit of an art historic perspective. However, I do now know enough to catch many of the movie blunders (ie they showed the servants polishing forks with four prongs, which weren’t invented until the 18th century, however the movie is supposed to have taken place in the 1600’s.)

However, Scarlett Johansson was a good choice for the title character Griet. She bears a fairly good resemblance to the girl in the actual painting.

Understanding that the movie is completely fictional and not based on actual facts or even really theories as to the origin of the painting, the movie is rather entertaining. The character of Pieter (who I just placed as the Scarecrow from the new Batman Begins movie) was very sweet, and I was rather upset that Griet declined his marriage proposal. I mean, come one…she is working as a servant in a place where nearly everyone hates her, and is constantly playing tricks on her. The only thing keeping her there is Johannes, the artist. He opens up to her about his artwork and realizes that she understands what he sees. (She even does a few things to make his painting better.)
